The PROJECT
T2 Hangar fitness centre is a converted World War 2 aircraft hangar. The design restores a derelict Ministry of Defence building, inserting new elements to differentiate and personalise the vast interior while retaining the industrial scale and character of a historic wartime hangar.
The interior aesthetic is sparse and raw. Exercise areas are dispersed throughout an open floor plan overlooked by mezzanine exercise areas, a gallery and cafe. Celestial glazing provides natural light distributed evenly throughout the deep interiors while highlighting the beauty of the ‘Type T2’ structure.
The design was commended by English Heritage and has been used as a template for similar conversions of this ubiquitous hangar.
